Portfolios/Auditions


Included in the admission process is your portfolio/audition and an interview. During the review you may be asked questions regarding career goals, college goals and expectations, arts-related training and experience, and your general background.

Audition Requirements:
Under special circumstances, FloArts will approve the submission of slides or video in lieu of an on-site audition/portfolio review. However, final acceptance is contingent upon an interview with the area faculty and the Dean.

FINE ART
  • All fine art candidates must submit a portfolio of 15 or more original artworks created from observation -
    no fantasy/anime stylization or copying from photos.
    May include different media types such as drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and 35mm slides of sculpture, ceramics, mixed media and fiber;

  • Present journals and or sketchbooks with portfolio;

  • A strong visual presentation is essential to assure the most accurate assessment of your abilities;

  • In addition to the above portfolio, each candidate will create the following images and include them in their presentation:
    • 1. With graphite pencil, create a line composition of kitchen utensils, tools, or mechanical parts concentrating on the character, sensitivity and descriptive quality of line (no shading). Consider line qualities and composition. Size 16" x 20"
    • 2. A figure drawing or self-portrait from a mirror (may not be drawn from a photograph). Size 16" x 20"
    • 3. A landscape drawing demonstrating atmospheric depth of field and linear perspective. Size 16" x 20"

GRAPHIC DESIGN/NEW MEDIA
  • All graphic design/new media candidates must submit a portfolio of at least 15 or more original artworks created from observation - no fantasy/anime stylization or copying from photos.
    May include different media types such as drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and 35 mm slides of sculpture, ceramics, mixed media and fiber.
  • Present journals and or sketchbooks with portfolio
  • A strong visual presentation is essential to assure the most accurate assessment of your abilities

  • In addition to the above portfolio, each candidate will create the following images and include them in their presentation:
    • 1. Using black ink only, create a graphic image (logo) combining a letter and a symbol. (Example; the letter H and a heart symbol) Size 6" x 6"
    • 2. Design a collage of images and text from magazines or newspapers using either nature or industry as a theme. Size 16" x 20"
    • 3. With graphite pencil, create a line composition of kitchen utensils, tools, or mechanical parts concentrating on the character, sensitivity and descriptive quality of line (no shading). Consider line qualities and composition. Size 16" x 20"

PHOTOGRAPHY
  • All photography candidates must submit a portfolio of at least 15 or more original artworks created from observation, of which 10 may be photographs -
    no fantasy/anime stylization or copying from photos.
    May include different media types such as drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and 35 mm slides of sculpture, ceramics, mixed media and fiber.
  • Present journals and or sketchbooks with portfolio
  • A strong visual presentation is essential to assure the most accurate assessment of your abilities

  • In addition to the above portfolio, each candidate will create the following images and include them in their presentation.
    The following photographs must be made using (standard) 35 mm or other film formats and may be presented in B/W or color. The images may be developed and printed by a photo-lab and should be no smaller than 5" x 7". No digital prints or manipulations.
    • 1. Make a photographic self portrait
    • 2. Create an image of a landscape or cityscape
    • 3. Photograph an interior corner of a room, including a window
    • 4. Compose a still-life of kitchen utensils

ILLUSTRATION
  • All illustration candidates must submit a portfolio of 15 or more original artworks created from observation -
    no fantasy/anime stylization or copying from photos.
    May include different media types such as drawings, paintings, prints, photographs, and 35 mm slides of sculpture, ceramics, mixed media and fiber.
  • Present journals and or sketchbooks with portfolio

THEATER PRODUCTION (Scenic Lighting Design and Costume Design)
  • Portfolio materials should be organized in a folder or case for presentation.
  • The portfolio should first present the student's resume (education, training, and experience).
  • The portfolio should contain individual pieces that demonstrate the student's artistic ability in the areas of technical theatre. (Drawing, painting, writing, photography, sewing, drafting, rendering, construction, sound editing, etc.)
  • The portfolio should contain photos of the student working in their areas of interest.
  • The student should have at least one example of a complete design process in one of their areas of interest. (Not necessarily a realized production. It can be an assignment that shows the design process from research to project in the form of a model or renderings.)

  • Any examples of a realized design process or design that actually went into production should have the following displayed together in the portfolio:
    • Research demonstrating a thorough script analysis;
    • Any drafting or drawings done in the planning stages;
    • Photos of the work in progress focusing specifically on what the student is working on;
    • Photos of the finished product in production.

STAGE MANAGEMENT - consists of an interview and/or portfolio presentation.

ACTING
The acting audition consists of the presentation of monologues and an interview.
The guidelines are:
  • Choose two contrasting monologues from realistic, contemporary, or near-contemporary plays that are age appropriate.
  • Demonstrate your natural speaking voice. No foreign dialects or character voices.
  • Each selection should be one minute or less.

MUSICAL THEATER

The musical theater audition consists of an acting, voice, AND dance audition.
Be prepared to perform the following:
  • Acting - Present two contrasting monologues. Follow the acting guidelines.
  • Voice - Prepare one ballad and one upbeat number from the Broadway musical repertoire. Bring a taped accompaniment. If an accompanist is needed, make arrangements with our office.
  • Dance - Prepare a two-minute dance solo that includes the following elements: pirouette
  • pas de bouree
  • battement
  • stag leap
  • jazz runs
  • jazz squares
  • grapevine
  • fan kick
  • isolations
  • hitch-kick
  • chaine or pique turns

DANCE STUDIES

Dance candidates are judged on artistic interpretaion, movement retention, accuracy of movement, alginment, and training.
The dance audition constists of an audition class and a two-minute solo. The dance requirements are:
  • Dress appropriately in leotard and tights. Have ballet shoes, pointe shoes, etc.
  • Participate in an audition class consisting of both ballet and contemporary dance techniques.
  • Perform a two-minute dance solo. You or another choreographer may choreograph the dance solo.
